Sock Hop Fundraiser for Bellarine Theatre Co. Friday at LBI Foundation

This Friday, the 1950s are back at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies. The Bellarine Theatre Co. will host a Sock Hop Summer Fundraiser for the upcoming musical production “Cry Baby,” based on the 1990s John Waters cult classic film chronicling the “star-crossed” romance of Baltimore bad boy Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker and the local good girl, Allison, in 1954 Baltimore. The show follows them through their newfound romance to the tune of the budding rock ’n’ roll revolution. But before the audience can see whether the romance ends in triumph or tragedy (at Stafford Township Arts Center July 27-30), Bellarine wants to bring a taste of the era to the Island.

The event runs from 7 to 9 p.m., and $10 buys admission and a ticket to the ice cream bar, where The WooHoo will be serving homemade ice cream. Guests can then grab a cast member and dance the night away. Along with the ice cream bar and dancing, the event offers ’50s-themed activities for families and fans of all ages.

In the 1950s, souped-up cars were king. BTC invites anyone with a cool, classic car to bring it to the event to receive a free ticket to “Cry Baby.” The troupe hopes to draw a large variety of classic cars from any era, but the 1950s hot rods might get a couple of extra looks.

Although a night of family fun to support the theater company, the Sock Hop is also part competition. First up is a pie-eating contest with the winner receiving a stomach full of delicious pie along with two tickets to BTC’s production of “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” in the fall. Next is the Corn-Hole Tournament. Be sure to choose a partner wisely because the winners will receive two VIP tickets to “Cry Baby.” After that, head to the dance floor for the Twist Competition. The winner with the best twist will take home two VIP tickets to “Cry Baby.” Last but not least is the Costume Contest. Bust out the hair grease and leather jackets because anyone who shows up in a ’50s themed costume receives a special prize, with the winner getting another set of two VIP tickets to – you guessed it – “Cry Baby.”
